At Bent Arrow, seeing past participants thrive is one of the most rewarding aspects of our work. Building lasting relationships with our clients is at our core—whether they are just beginning their journey or returning to share their successes, and their stories inspire us to do our best to support our community.
One such success story is that of Tyler Sound, a former participant in the Journey to Success program. For Tyler, the program was more than just a stepping stone—it was an opportunity to reconnect with his culture, find stability, and encourage others to succeed within their own paths.
Journey To Success is a nonpaid pre-employment program offering career development support, followed by a four-week job placement. It is designed to meet the needs of unemployed individuals, support them in addressing barriers, and assist them in their journey to obtain and maintain long-term employment.
Punctuality, discipline, and effort are all key to succeeding in the program. However, health is an especially important aspect in achieving success. Tyler mentions how Bent Arrow took the time and effort to ensure all members were well-fed with provided lunches. After enjoying the program for himself, Tyler thought it was worth recommending to a friend who also needed a fresh start.
“I told my friend about this program, and she said this is what she needs for a fresh start. You take this program; they’ll help you navigate with what you want to do.”
Originally from Kinuso, Alberta, and Swan River First Nation, Tyler used his experiences at Bent Arrow to further connect himself with his culture, a key component of healing within Indigenous communities.

“They got me more in touch with my culture; there are parts of the program that touch on that. I was really grateful for that. We smudged every morning, giving thanks to the Creator. We give people respect around here.”
After battling addictions and getting sober on his own, Tyler’s next step was starting the process of finding employment. After arriving at Bent Arrow and applying for programs, he later got a date. After finishing the program, he was later sponsored to do a job placement as a welder.
While discussing some of his favourite memories or interactions with Bent Arrow, Tyler mentioned his experiences with the Journey to Success Facilitator, Jake Greyeyes.
“Jake is the best; I love Jake. He made the time go by so quick. He teaches and interacts with you. He makes you feel comfortable. You open up with him a bit more.”
Community has always been at the heart of Bent Arrow. Most importantly, ensuring everyone—whether they’re staff, clients or people stopping by—feel like family. Sound echoes that statement, saying he still visits Bent Arrow even after finishing the program.
“I felt like family; I still come in. It feels good.”
