FULL TIME YOUTH WORKER (ISKWEW HOUSE)

 

Job description

Iskwew operates under the teaching of traditional Indigenous peoples and our hope is to introduce or reconnect the young people with their culture and traditions. Iskwew Home provides long-term care for pregnant and/or parenting youth. The youth living there need to learn about personal responsibility, living skills, parenting skills and the ability to plan successfully for their future.

Responsibilities

  • Provide a safe, supportive environment for the youth
  • Access and research alternative/traditional day programming for the youth
  • Provide and support in transporting youth within the community for day programming
  • Create/facilitate day programming in the absence of community options
  • Work with community agencies who also work with or provide services to the youth
  • Work effectively with the youth's care team in developing healing plans as well as maintaining reporting on the youth’s progress while in our program
  • Deal with the individual and group behaviors
  • Maintain a healthy, happy environment
  • Plan and participate in the daily planning of recreational activities, life skills workshops, parenting workshops and cultural activities
  • Participate in monthly staff meetings and sessions with the psychologist
  • Become familiar with community agencies that offer cultural resources and connect the youth with such resources.

 

Qualification Requirements

  • Completion of a Human Services Degree or Diploma is preferred
  • A minimum of 2 years related work experience
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends
  • Knowledge of Indigenous culture is an asset
  • Knowledge of trauma informed care and the ability to use a harm reduction approach
  • Passion for working with Indigenous individuals; excited about being a catalyst of change in youth's lives.
  • Must have an understanding of the impact the loss of culture identity and intergeneration residential school syndrome has had on Indigenous people.
  • Must have own vehicle and be willing to transport clients.
  • Must have a valid Class 5 non graduated driver’s license and willing to provide a clear drivers abstract
  • Must have 2-million-dollar liability insurance coverage
  • Must provide a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector and Intervention Record Check (within a 6-month period from date of completion).
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Salary and Benefits

Starting Wage  - $3952.64 - $4150.27 per month

  • Paid sick and wellness days after 3 months’ probation (pro-rated)
  • Extended Health Benefit (50/50 cost sharing) after 6 months’ employment.
  • Working approximately 40.0 hours per week
